During my morning ritual of random internet exploration, I came across this youtube video by ASAPscience detailing a "secret" of muscle growth. I was initially curious just from the title; what possible secret could there be in building muscle? By definition, a secret is something that is not known or meant to be known by others, so even as I clicked "play" I was skeptical.
What this video does is detail the effects of Myostatin on the human body, and it makes a pretty compelling case for the notion of "I am ripped because my genetics are superior."
The basic argument in the video is that the amount of Myostatin your body genetically produces directly affects the amount of muscle you can build. If your genes have cursed you with a lot of Myostatin, you will not build much muscle, however, if your body does not contain very much, you will have fewer limits on muscle growth.
After watching this video, I felt that something was missing. For example, how did I go from a skinny little Asian kid to how I look now? (which still isn't very good--always improve!)
After more research, I came across this article. Here is a direct quote from it:
"Coming back to myostatin, it’s important to note that one of the benefits of chronic, and appropriately applied resistance training is that our body upregulates testosterone and IGF-1 production and downregulates myostatin, creating an internal environment conducive to muscle healing and growth."
These findings have been supported by scientific research, and I feel is an important aspect of myostatin that the video left out! Resistance training (AKA Calisthenics) downregulates the amount of myostatin in your body!
Basically, the more you workout, the less myostatin will have an effect. So basically, there is no "secret"--- Work out hard to gain muscle!
