About California Calisthenics
As three college-level athletes, we have been exercising and training our entire lives. But once our athletic careers ended, we lost the privileges of beautiful facilities and expensive equipment. At home we experimented with the P90X and Insanity workouts. In the gym we experimented with weight training and Crossfit workouts. Although these are all great forms of exercise and we enjoyed many parts of each, they are also expensive and complex. All of them are dependent on at least one material, whether it is weight lifting equipment or a DVD. Without these materials, your workout is ruined. Calisthenics can be done anywhere and the only thing required is YOU. So, we did some more research and established a calisthenic program that can be accessed anywhere over the internet.
the program
This program was designed using the exercises we have been doing since physical education in elementary school It's simple, cheap, and time-sensitive but at the end of each workout you will hardly be able to move. The bulk of the program is based around a bar workout performed on every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The in-between days are set for a stability workout and a leg workout. Finally, the weekends are lightened for recovery with cardio and stretching. The same workouts will be performed each week. After 4 weeks the workouts will be modified so your bodies never settle with any exercise.

CALIfornia calisthenics was developed as fun, simple, and cheap way to exercise while enjoying the outdoors of your community. No gym membership required. All exercises performed in this program can be executed in a nearby park or school with a playground. All you'll need are some monkey bars, parallel bars, and a pull-up bar.
What makes us different than most exercise routines are our pillars which we uphold in each workout. At California Calisthenics, we have developed 5 key tenets which direct and guide us in our workout lifestyle. These beliefs are the reason why we have "evolved out of the gym" and what we feel embodies the Calisthenics movement

Core Pillars (f.a.i.n.t)
FAILURE: Push until absolute failure
In any workout, what you put in is what you are going to get out. The same rule applies to Calisthenics, but even more so because you do not have a personal trainer yelling at you do more. Effort must come from within. You must "Reach the point where you can't do anymore, and then do one more" in order to build muscle and burn fat.
AFFORDABILITY
Gym memberships can cost up to $50 a month, not including an activation fee. A Cross-fit membership can cost $150+ a month. By implementing the CALI-sthenics workout of the day series, you can get the same workout you would have at a gym or Cross-fit session for free.

INJURY PREVENTION
From our personal experience, lifting heavy for many years at a gym is accompanied with lower and upper back pain, muscle tears, and cold/flu acquisition-- even while maintaining good form and sanitation. Every workout at California Calisthenics promotes natural movement using your own body weight in an outdoor setting . This method drastically diminishes the number of injury and sickness one would experience with constant lifting at a gym. |
NUTRITION
Just as important as it is to workout, maintaining a proper diet is essential to getting the body you want and deserve. There are many ways to eat healthy, however, at California Calisthenics, we believe that simplicity is efficiency. Fruits, vegetables, protein, and whole wheat are key to a healthy lifestyle. Remove excess fats and junk food from your diet. Nonetheless, in following our high intensity workouts, you will be able to indulge in your favorite desert every once in a while-- just realize that you are treating yourself and the workout that you will do the following day will burn off your reward.
TIME
With Calisthenics, there is no driving to the gym, finding parking, waiting for a machine to open up, or waiting for your free weight to become available. In following the California Calisthenics model, you are working out at a park near your house in an open setting, enjoying natural sunlight. All the work outs of the day can be done at your own pace, with the average time lasting from 30-45 minutes.
