One of my favorite aspects of sharing calisthenic workouts with friends and future bar-stars is seeing their faces as they come down from the bars after doing their first muscle up.
During our Monday workout we had two regulars bust out their first muscle up, and it was evident from their glowing faces that they were full of pride and accomplishment. For not only is it an impressive athletic feat, but now they can tell their friends and family that they can do something which 98% of people cannot do. With that, they become specialized as a bar athlete, which pushes them to work harder in their subsequent workouts.

I have found the most gains with the muscle up than with any other calisthenic exercise. Lats, Shoulders, Back, Triceps, Biceps, you name it-- your whole upper body must work in conjunction to perform a proper muscle up. In addition, if you bust out a set of 10 muscle ups at the gym, followed by a back lever, heads will turn. Bros will drop their weights and ask you how you did that. Girls will eye you tantalizingly from their workout stations. End result: you feel like a boss. |
Therefore, if you haven't got the muscle up down yet, I urge you not to give up in your training! Before each workout, apportion 5 minutes for giving everything you have to reach that muscle up. Watch our youtube tutorial--and listen to each word deeply! If you can do muscle ups already, keep training them HARD! Set an athletic goal of reaching 20 muscle ups in a row, or throw a weighted vest on to make the exercise harder.
