Supplements
Overall, there are too many differing opinions, recommendations, and research contradicting each other to tell you which supplements are good or bad. Therefore, this page is not to tell you what you should or shouldn't take. Instead, it is to inform you what works for us and guide you towards what works for you. Ultimately, supplements are available to provide you a boost in the part of your health that you feel is lacking. They will not do the all the work for you, but if used properly, they can be a valuable addition to your health and training.

Vitamin D is one of the most important vitamins in our bodies. Yes, it is true that can receive ample amounts of Vitamin D from the sun, but how many of us have a lifestyle that allows us time to run around outside. This is another benefit to our calisthenic workouts, but for those days when your stuck inside it is important to still get adequate Vitamin D.
Vitamin D is essential to many functions in the body. The most important function is its work with calcium and Vitamins A & K to help promote mineralization and bone growth all over the body. It is also involved in strengthening your immune response, the expression of genes, and decreasing chronic inflammation. Most Vitamin D supplements come in 1000 IU pills and 4000 IU's of Vitamin D is a sufficient amount for a cloistered day inside. Therefore, one or two pills with the added minimal exposure to the outdoors is enough to supplement my health.
Make sure you are taking Vitamin D3 instead of Vitamin D2. Vitamin D3 is the same type of Vitamin D that you would get from the sun and is, therefore, more biologically accepted and recognized in the body.
In addition, I take Probiotic pills to assist with my history of troubled stomach issues (See Testimonial for more). But, this doesn't mean a good Probiotic supplement wouldn't be relevant to YOU!!! Our bodies are constantly working in together with bacteria in our gut to help properly digest our food. The problem is that there are good bacteria helping us and bad bacteria hurting us. When there is more bad bacteria, it results in stomach issues, and when there is more good bacteria, we continue feeling healthy. But, todays society is making it more difficult to win this battle. Things like too much stress, diarrhea and vomiting, and antibiotics can kill the healthy bacteria in your gut, giving the bad bacteria a huge advantage. For that reason, a Probiotic supplement every other day can provide dramatic benefits to your daily stomach battles.
Yogurt is also a valuable source of Probiotics. Unfortunately, with all the processing and chemical modifications of foods, some yogurts don't provide sufficient amounts to help. Stick with more natural yogurts or go greek. Plus, taking a Probiotic supplement or eating yogurt during sickness or times of stress can help prepare your gut and leave you feeling better faster.

It should be clear that any vitamin is no substitute for eating a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables. Our bodies absorb nutrients from actual foods much better than concentrated sources, and eating nutritious foods often serves as a good way to consume fiber.
However, the vast majority of Americans do not get 100% of the daily recommended intake for certain nutrients that are lacking in their diet. I, for one, being lactose intolerant with an aversion to carrots, probably don't get enough calcium and vitamin A. Nonetheless, there are certain components that every diet will lack due to monetary, cultural, or time management reasons. Over time, deficiencies in certain vitamins and minerals can add up and lead to adverse health problems.
Therefore, I recommend taking a good multivitamin to "cover all your bases" and ensure that you are not being deficient in certain aspects of your nutrition. Choose one that contains the vitamins that you require to supplement your lifestyle. For example, I look for a one-a-day multivitamin that contains ample amounts of calcium, vitamin A, and iron, because I know that my diet lacks those components. That being said, I still try to eat as much carrots, yogurt, and beans to TRY and reach the recommended intake through natural foods.
All in all, use a multivitamin to supplement and encourage a healthy lifestyle with assurance that your body has what it needs to live long and prosper!
