Sleep & recovery
Although it is one of the most unappreciated elements of life , sleep is an essential component to all three of our characteristics of health:
physically...
Sleep is essential to your physical growth! While you sleep, the cells in your heart and vessels are repairing and rebuilding to withstand the added stresses of the next day. Strong vessels are essential in preventing atherosclerosis and have been linked to preventing heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and stroke. In addition, your muscles repair and become stronger during sleep. Little muscle activity while sleeping allows your muscles to concentrate on repair and build for the next day of exercise.
biologically...
Sleep is essential to maintaining your biological systems! Without sleep your endocrine system is compromised and your hormones become unbalanced. This can lead to increases in hormones like insulin, ghrelin, and leptin, which are important for apetite control and fat storage. Sleep deficiency can also lead to a decreased immune system, causing you to get sick easier. Sleep is vital in the recovery and preparation of the brain for the next day. During sleep, your brain is storing new learned skills and memory for later use. The efficiency and productivity is crucial to the recovery of the brain during sleep.
Emotionally...
Sleep deficiency can manipulate your mood and eliminate your emotional drive. A lack of sleep has been shown to make you more irritable, agitated, and unmotivated. Consequently, these emotions can have a negative effect on your relations, environment, and decisions. Ultimately, this affects your daytime performance and can put you at risk for injury if placed in mentally demanding situations like driving.
in Summation...
Listen to your body!!! Overuse without proper recovery can lead to physical injuries and mental deterioration. Our program is set up to allow adequate rest of our muscles and minds through alternating muscle groups and a light workload weekend. Try to get a minimum of 7 hours of sleep a day and leave time for you to relax leisurely.
